What Conditions Physiotherapy Treats, Prevents, or Manages

A physiotherapist is trained and licensed to diagnose physical abnormalities, promote physical activity and proper function, maintain physical function, and restore physical function and mobility.

This is why physiotherapy, similar to what Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry offers, is beneficial for people of all ages, but most especially, for seniors in home care or aged care residences. With musculoskeletal functions going through changes as people age, any strategy that can help deal with such problems would be most welcome.

Conditions That Can Be Treated by Physiotherapy

Arthritis

This is a condition that can cause joint pain, stiffness, and heat. Physiotherapy can help manage symptoms and provide pain relief through exercise and other forms of therapy. There are exercise programmes that you can take advantage of.

Asthma

Physiotherapists can help asthma patients by showing them how to retrain breathing and to breathe in a more relaxed way. They can also recommend activity and exercises that can help manage asthma.

Back Pain

Managing back pain is among the speciality of physiotherapists and seeing one can mean speedy recovery and future prevention. Physiotherapy may involve manual treatments, exercise, acupuncture, and other ways to treat and prevent back pain.

Osteoporosis

Don’t wait for osteoporosis to lead to broken bones, especially when you are at an age where falls and fractures are common. Once diagnosed, you should see a physiotherapist right away, so he can recommend ways to prevent thinning of bones, strengthen bones and muscles, manage pain, and reduce falls.

Chronic Pain

Physiotherapy can help manage the condition and minimise its impact on a patient’s life. If you are suffering from chronic pain, reducing its intensity is a welcome relief. Physiotherapists can also provide massage, hands-on treatments, and other options to manage long-term pain.

Neck Pain

The kind of neck pain that physiotherapists treat is unlike the ordinary pain that you may sometimes experience. It is a musculoskeletal disorder that also includes repetitive strain injury and back pain. Apart from hands-on treatments, such as acupuncture and manual therapy, physiotherapy will also create exercise programmes and provide tips that meet your needs and provide pain relief.

Cardiovascular Disease

Heart attack, stroke, and angina are just some of the problems that seniors may face. One way to prevent these is to exercise and stay active, something physiotherapy can help with. But that’s not all. Physiotherapists also offer cardiac rehabilitation programmes that can improve your quality of life and health.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Pulmonary rehabilitation programmes are considered extremely effective in treating this particular condition, and a physiotherapist is one of the most important health professionals who make up the team that runs the programmes.

Falls and Fractures

What physiotherapist can do is to improve balance, help reduce the risk of falling, strengthen bones, and advise on activities that will maintain or improve your mobility.

Diabetes

What physiotherapists can offer diabetes patients are strategies to help manage lifestyle changes and ensure blood glucose levels are kept under control. These include a healthy diet, exercise regimen, and assessment for a foot splint in case a dropped foot is developed.

Cancer

Research shows that exercise can increase a cancer patient’s chances of survival or prevent some cancers from coming back. Physiotherapy can help keep patients active and find ways to treat side effects such as lymphoedema, osteoporosis, and tiredness.

Other conditions that physiotherapy can treat, prevent, and/or manage are high blood pressure, Parkinson’s disease, incontinence, and multiple sclerosis.

The same health professionals will also provide recommendations for occupational health and rehabilitation programmes.

Needless to say, young and old alike can benefit from what physiotherapists can offer, whether they are affected by the conditions listed above or not. With the kind of preventative tips that they can provide, seeking their help will definitely work to your advantage.

Dry Needling

Dry Needling or Acupuncture Perth?

Dry needling is a great tool employed by staff at Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry Yokine to enhance your treatment and rehabilitation.

Confused about dry needling and acupuncture ? Read on to find out more.

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is a unique procedure whereby small pins are introduced into dysfunctional tissues to help promote pain relief, tissue healing and restore muscle function.

Trigger points are tight areas of fibrous muscle that impact performance and can cause pain or discomfort. Dry needles ( nothing is injected ) are inserted into trigger point zones to can help to reduce pain and may obtain a twitch response which allows the muscle to relax.

What is the difference between Acupuncture and dry needling?

Dry needling is easily confused with Acupuncture. Even though the same type of pin/  needle is used, the theory and clinical reasoning behind the placement of the needle is different.

Acupuncture is a Tradition Chinese Medicine tool that utilises meridians which are paths of energy flowing through the body. Acupuncture is aimed to restore balance and improve systemic medical pathologies through the restoration of Qi (flow of Yin and Yang energy).

The benefits of dry needling:

  • Reduce pain levels
  • Accelerate healing
  • Promote blood flow
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Restore normal tissue function
  • Desensitise the muscular system
  • Break scar tissue

Dry needling is most effective when combined with other treatment options. At Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatristry Joondanna our therapists are trained to compliment dry needling with therapies such as massage, trigger point therapy, joint mobilisation and individualised stretching and strengthening program to enhance recovery.

Tess at Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry dry needling a patient.
Tess at Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry dry needling a patient.

What does dry needling feel like?

It is important to acknowledge that all patients respond differently. Our therapists at Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry Dianella ensure that the patient is comfortable and warning and consent is given at all times.

Dry needles are much thinner than a normal needle used for injection or blood tests.  Thinner needle = less pain.

Initially you may feel a sharp pinch as the needle is inserted into your muscle fibres. This may be followed by a muscle twitch and/or a dull ache. Some patients experience referred pain, whilst others feel no pain sensations. Some mild post treatment soreness is normal, although not always present.

What training do your professionals have?

All of our therapists at Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry Tuart Hill possess a bachelor in either Physiotherapy or Podiatry. Additionally they have post graduate training in dry needling so you are in safe hands with our professional therapists.

So call us today on 9349 1777 to make a booking with a Physiotherapist or Podiatrist today for dry needling, acupuncture Perth.

Podiatrists

A lot of people ask me, “what do Podiatrists actually do?”. The common perception of our profession is the ability to only treat toenails and hard skin. I can guarantee we do so much more than that! Podiatrists are university trained to assess, diagnose, manage and treat all foot and ankle conditions in a conservative manner. If the case requires a surgical or more invasive treatment, we are able to refer on to Podiatric Surgeons or other professionals who can provide the service. As general podiatrists, we commonly treat the conditions below:

Bunions / hammer toes / Tailor’s bunions
Heel / arch pain / plantar fasciitis.
Ingrown toenails.
Warts.
Callus (hard skin / cracked heels).
Corns (pin-points of hard skin).
Fungal toenails / skin.
Morton’s neuroma (sharp, shooting forefoot pain).
Diabetic feet
Sports injuries; ankle, midfoot, forefoot.
Gait/Walking abnormalities
Paediatric conditions; club foot, pigeon toeing.

For the next few weeks I will talk more about the conditions above and go over signs and symptoms and when is the appropriate time to come in to be assessed by a qualified, AHPRA registered Podiatrist.

Any other foot problems not on the list? No worries, come and have your feet examined now at Dr7 Podiatry, call 9349 1777 to make an appointment.

Helping Seniors Manage Diabetes | Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry

Helping Seniors Live the Good Life despite Having Diabetes

Diabetes can happen to anyone at any age, but seniors are at risk of acquiring the disease for a variety of reasons. Although the condition is not age-related, the risk factors increase as you grow older. At Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry Yokine, we encourage our patients to live healthier and to be more active to help fight diabetes.

  • Type 1 diabetes is often diagnosed during childhood.
  • Type 2 diabetes is often diagnosed in adulthood.

diabetes

Who are at risk of diabetes?

  • Adults over 45 years old, who are overweight, have high blood pressure and a genetic predisposition.
  • Adults over the age of 55.
  • Adults who have heart disease or have a heart attack in the past.
  • Adults who are overweight and have polycystic ovary syndrome.
  • Adults over 35 years old and are Aboriginal Australian or Torres Strait Islander.

In Australia, an estimated 50% of those with diabetes are 65 years or older. The prevalence of diabetes increases rapidly up to age 75 based on 2014-15 data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2014–15 National Health Survey.

Clearly, there is a need to prevent diabetes from affecting anyone, but most especially seniors who would feel the complications twice as much.

The problem with this disease, however, is that symptoms don’t always manifest early on. It is not as obvious in young people as it is in the elderly. This calls for regular checkups of blood sugar levels.

Because failure to do so can lead to accumulation of glucose in the blood that can:

  • Cause damage to the artery and kidney
  • Increase the risk of heart attack and stroke
  • Result in eye damage that will lead to vision loss
  • Lead to erectile dysfunction in men
  • Cause nerve damage that can result in traumatic injury
  • Cause infection that can lead to amputation of limbs

When diabetes hits, however, the best approach is to manage the disease.

How do you help seniors manage their diabetes?

Consult the doctor regularly

Regular blood tests are necessary to keep the disease under control, as well as monitoring of weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and health of the feet. Your doctor will also administer flu and pneumococcal disease vaccinations and prescribe insulin or oral hypoglycaemic agents.

See a podiatrist regularly

Serious foot complications can arise because of diabetes. Vascular disease, ulceration, and neuropathy are just three of the diabetic foot problems that seniors may experience. A visit to a podiatrist at Dr7 Podiatry Joondanna will help minimise nerve damage and promote proper blood flow to your legs and feet.

Podiatry services will include a complete diabetic foot assessment that is followed by recommendations on how you can keep your feet in good health. Dr7 Podiatry Yokine and our professional podiatrists can offer these services.

Some of the things you may need to do include:

  • Washing your feet in warm water daily
  • Checking for cuts, blisters, and sores
  • Moisturising dry skin, especially between the toes
  • Wearing socks/stockings to prevent blisters, and slipper or shoes to prevent injuries

In addition, you need to ensure proper blood flow to your limbs by putting your feet up when sitting down, not crossing the legs for long periods, and not wearing tight socks and garters.

Make healthy choices

It is not enough that you watch an elderly loved one’s diet. You also need to ensure they make healthy food choices, such as more fruits and vegetables and less fat. Foods that contain carbohydrates make ideal options. If they stay in aged care residences, a healthy diet should be easier to achieve.

If you live with an elderly parent or loved one, however, you should pattern your diet with theirs if you eat together to encourage them to change their diet and make healthy choices. You should also stock up on food that they should eat and remove anything that will tempt them to get off the rails.

Engage in some form of physical activity

There are many physical activities that can do wonders for ageing individuals, but exercise, in particular, can have an impact on diabetes. It can:

  • Improve glucose tolerance
  • Lower the risk of developing serious complications
  • Help the body manage, reduce, and relieve stress
  • Control weight, which is vital to ensure a successful diabetes treatment

For seniors who are still free from diabetes, exercise also serves as the best form of prevention.

Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry Tuart Hill, has a hydrotherapy pool where patients can exercise in and we offer group aquafit and arthritis classes as well.

Help them quit smoking

This may be easier said than done, but you must insist. Smoking increases the risk of complications from diabetes, something an elderly parent would not want to endure or you would not want to witness. Find ways to encourage them to quit smoking or reduce their desire to reach for that cigarette.

Ensure recommended vaccinations are up to date

diabetes 1

Seniors with diabetes are more prone to acquiring various infections. This is why they should be vaccinated for some of the most common types of infections, such as Influenza & Pneumonia and Hepatitis B. Doing so will help ensure they don’t end up in hospitals more often than necessary.

Prevent diabetes whenever possible, and manage them properly when it hits you or an elderly loved one. Life goes on despite diabetes, after all.

Corns_and_Calluses-530x320

Corns and Calluses

Corns and Calluses forms when there is continuous pressure and friction on an area of skin. The pressure causes the layer of skin to die and a hard layer of skin is then formed to protect it. Corns are usually smaller than calluses and are formed on places like top, side and in between your toes. Calluses usually develop underneath your foot like on the heel and may differ in size and shape. Corns are more painful then calluses where as calluses can be uncomfortable.

corns and calluses

Causes:

Continuous pressure and friction can cause corns and calluses to form, these are some of the reasons:

  • Wearing shoes either too loose or too tight can cause friction on certain places on your foot. If the shoe is too loose your foot will be sliding around causing friction to the side of the foot.
  • High heels will compress the front of your toes and put pressure on the heel of your foot.
  • Not wearing socks will create friction within the shoe between your foot and the shoe itself.
  • Claw toes and bunions may contribute to the development of corns and calluses.

Treatment:

If the pain remains then you may come to Dr7 Podiatry in Yokine for a podiatrist to:

  • remove or debride the corns or calluses , this should not be done by yourself because it may be easily infected if not done properly
  • Over the counter medicine for corns and calluses  such as patches and cream may be applied, usually things that include salicylic acid. But this is not recommended because it will cause more problems in the future.
  • In rare cases surgery may be an option so that they may align your foot correctly.

Prevention:

You may apply these methods everyday to prevent corns or calluses from forming:

  • Moisturise the foot to keep the skin soft.
  • Wearing comfortable cushioned shoes and socks.
  • Custom orthotics may also align your feet and prevent friction within the shoes. You may book an appointment with Dr7 Physio and Podiatry Yokine Perth for a casting and dispense of custom orthotics.

blister2

Blisters

Blisters are a very common foot problem due to shoes not fitting correctly, either too tight or too loose. They are small pockets of skin filled with fluid caused by friction of the foot and the shoes most commonly. Walking or standing for several hours may also contribute to the cause due to the pressure you put on your feet. Moisture on your foot can also lead to blisters due to your pores being clogged up by sweat.

Treatment:

Unburst Blisters:

It is better to keep blisters unburst to avoid the risk of infection. Try not to cover up your blisters and let it breathe, but you may also put a plaster or bandage on it to prevent it from friction.

Burst Blisters:

If the blister has burst due to the large amount of friction that has been put on it, do not remove the skin. Instead you should wash it properly and use sterile dressing to dress it everyday until it is healed.

blister1

Draining Blisters:

This is not recommended but if the blister is in an awkward area or causes too much pain, you may burst and drain it yourself.

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly and sterilise a needle
  2. Puncture the sides of the blister with the sterile needle and not the centre of it
  3. Gently press down on the blister and let the fluid drain out
  4. Wash the blister after all fluid is drained
  5. Dry the area and apply a sterile dressing over it and change this everyday to avoid infection.

If there is blood in the blister this method is not recommended and instead you should not burst it and just let it heal itself.

blister

Prevention:

  • Wearing Shoes that fit well and not lacing up your shoes too tight
  • Wear socks that are breathable and moisture wicking
  • Putting orthotics in your shoes may position your foot better, we can custom make orthotics at Dr7 Physio and Podiatry.
  • Keeping your feet dry by putting talcum powder or antiperspirant

Hydrotherapy

What is physiotherapy?

What is physiotherapy? Physiotherapy is a medical practice that is designed to help patients with injuries. The aim is to restore mobility and flexibility. In most cases, their services are called in to help patients recovering from injury or disease.

A physiotherapist is a qualified, well-trained individual. They work in concert with doctors to provide a physical element to the recovery. Like all medical personnel, they work so the patient can get better and be given the tools to remain healthy.

Physiotherapists use a variety of techniques and go over various data. Their tasks require them to make assessments, diagnosis and prescribe treatments for a broad range of conditions. Movement disorders, joint issues, injuries, and other mobility-related problems are part of their expertise.

However, the practice is not limited to post-injury treatment. They can also be called upon to provide regimens meant to prevent injury or promote better health. Physical rehabilitation and maintenance of mobility, along with aid in particular chronic disease management programs, is not unusual.

A typical physiotherapist in Australia will have an education in patient education and occupational health.

You might be wondering: why would I need a physiotherapist? The first inclination is to think that you don’t and never will. An injury-free lifestyle and a healthy diet, along with exercise, seems like a good recipe for keeping the doctor at bay.

However, various people might come to a physiotherapist to address a variety of concerns. Even those who are perfectly healthy may decide to consult one, in the interest of staying in good health. It helps that the discipline can address a broad range of needs.

Cardiovascular and respiratory therapy are everyday actions for physio Dianella.

The heart and lungs are like the body’s engine, making sure that all the right stuff is pumped into all the right places. Physiotherapy regimens can help rehabilitate people living at risk of many hearts and lung-related conditions, such as asthma.

The physio Osborne Park practice can also provide technique’s to help recover from surgery involving the cardiovascular or respiratory systems.

Cancer is also a possible cause you might seek physiotherapy Dianella.

Lymphoedema, palliative care, and other cancer-related needs can be addressed through the right regimens. Physiotherapists can devise programs that include the treatment and management of the fatigue associated with the cancer treatments.

At the same time, they can aid in deconditioning and alleviating the muscle and joint stiffness. These are sometimes known to be side effects of certain types of cancer treatment.

The elderly can also reap a variety of benefits. Exercise and physical activity – as directed by physiotherapy Dianella – can help improve the quality of life for senior citizens.

Older individuals can use physiotherapy to improve their mobility in the wake of incontinence, osteoporosis, and other conditions. A regimen can also be designed to aid in remaining mobile and active, even in their old physical state.

Physiotherapy can also help the old address continence issues.

Women’s health is also an area that may benefit. Pregnancy, bowel control, post-partum care, pre-birth exercises, and menopause are all areas where physiotherapy can offer assistance.

Some neurological concerns may also be addressed.

Neurology and physiotherapy converge in the areas of damage to the spinal cord or brain. Injuries and trauma may reduce mobility or quality of life. A combination of neurological efforts and physiotherapy regimens can reduce the problem, particularly for conditions such as Parkinson’s or multiple sclerosis.

Orthopaedic concerns are also covered.

Physiotherapy Yokine can help the management of acute or chronic conditions. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and amputations are some areas that the practice can help with. They are also part of the rehabilitation program for orthopaedic surgery.

Musculoskeletal areas can also benefit from physiotherapy. The primary focus here lies in preventing strain and injury. Techniques can also address some underlying problems, such as limited mobility, or neck and back pain.

Physiotherapy Dianella can also assist various occupational health concerns. The practices and exercises can support the overall well-being of workers. They can also help in reducing the risk of injury or disease and address safety hazards.

There are other areas where a physiotherapist Joondanna might be able to offer help. Consult with one to make sure. Other areas where physio Dianella might help include men recovering from testicular cancer. Physio Yokine can also assist various paediatric concerns.

You might be curious about the average physiotherapy Osborne Park session. Below you’ll find a description of how things tend to go so that you can get an idea for yourself.

The session – indeed, your entire relationship with a physiotherapist – begins with questions. The therapist will ask about your overall health and various other queries, intent on getting an idea about your unique needs and condition. The treatment will depend on what is learned at this stage.

Assessment and diagnosis of what the patient needs follows, using information on the condition. The goal at this point is to know what would be required, which informs the plan and regimen.

This is also the point where the therapist inquires about the patient’s goals. Some patients want to run marathons, while others want to remain physically mobile even in old age. What they want will affect what the therapist will recommend.
