Children’s Feet Footwear

Footwear and Developing Miletones in Children’s Feet

From a young age, children’s feet are constantly evolving and changing shape. As a result, footwear is very important as your child progresses from their first steps to running around playing sports. Here are some common milestones to look for in your kids’ feet, and what to look for in footwear.

6 months – 2 years

Your kids’ feet are soft and malleable with a fused bone structure. We highly recommend walking barefoot to strengthen the muscles and develop correct bone structure.

FOOTWEAR TIP: look for a soft, flexible outsole with minimal structure. This allows the natural motion of the foot.

2 years – 6 years

Each bone in the foot is starting to form. Fatty tissue surrounds the foot, which will eventually form the shape of the foot.

FOOTWEAR TIP: shoes need to be durable, lightweight and flexible. Firm heel counters are necessary to hold the heel in place,

6 years – 16 years:

The foot is now taking shape and requires more support. High impact activities can cause stress on their feet. This is worsened by poor fitted, unstable shoes.

FOOTWEAR TIP: sturdy heel counter, stable midfoot and flexibility in the toes are vital to support the foot during the gait cycle

16 years +

The foot has now fully developed into 26 bones and over 100 muscles/tendons/ligaments that require support

FOOTWEAR TIP: extra stability in the heel and midfoot to prevent over-pronation (flat footedness) whilst remaining flexible in the forefoot. Each shoe has different levels of stability to support the different foot types and shapes.

Senior Podiatrist at Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry

Podiatrist Angelo

WHAT DOES OUR PODIATRIST ANGELO TREAT

Having been a podiatrist for approximately 4 years, our Senior Podiatrist Angelo has been exposed to all aspects of podiatry at Dr7 Podiatry Yokine. From diabetic risk assessments and foot care, to paediatric sports injuries and disability rehabilitation, he has seen and treated patients from all ages and backgrounds. He has also worked alongside several soccer teams in Perth to provide acute management of lower leg injuries.

Over the past years, Angelo has developed a strong interest in pain and injury rehabilitation, with a particular focus on ankle injuries and rehabilitation. Having injured and fractured his ankle twice in 18 months, he knows from personal experience just how important it is to rehabilitate and treat the ankle with care to prevent long-term complications and risk re-injury. Angelo uses a variety of mobilisation, needling, massage and strapping techniques, along with isolated exercise and strength/conditioning programs to guide you through your rehabilitation and ensure you return to activities in peak condition and with full confidence in your body.

Ankle Pain

He also retains a special interest in paediatric podiatry. Having completed several courses and attended several paediatric-specific conferences over the years, Angelo is fully competent to diagnose, treat and provide long-term advice for kids ranging from 1 years of age through to adolescent years at Dr7 Podiatry Joondanna. He predominately treats ‘growing pains’ such as Severs Disease, Osgood-Schlatters and Freiburg’s Disease, and also works with a lot of state and district football, cricket, netball and soccer players for ankle, calf and foot injuries. Angelo’s main aim is to keep you playing without having to cease your activity levels. Injury management generally covers footwear changes and modifications, massage and release and providing strength and conditioning training for young athletes.

Other conditions Angelo is competent to assess and treat include but are not limited to:

  • Bunions
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis pain
  • Morton’s Neuroma and bursitis
  • Achilles tendinopathies
  • Peroneal tendinopathies
  • Patello-femoral pain
  • Metatarsal stress fractures

If suffering from acute/chronic injuries or pain, book in for an extensive biomechanical analysis and treatment with Angelo at Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry in Yokine.

Dr7 Physiotherapy Perth Exercise Program

Conditions Physiotherapy Treats | Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry

What Conditions Physiotherapy Treats, Prevents, or Manages

A physiotherapist is trained and licensed to diagnose physical abnormalities, promote physical activity and proper function, maintain physical function, and restore physical function and mobility.

Manual Release, Myofascial Release
Manual Release, Myofascial Release

This is why physiotherapy, similar to what Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry offers, is beneficial for people of all ages, but most especially, for seniors in home care or aged care residences. With musculoskeletal functions going through changes as people age, any strategy that can help deal with such problems would be most welcome.

Conditions That Can Be Treated by Physiotherapy

Arthritis

This is a condition that can cause joint pain, stiffness, and heat. Physiotherapy can help manage symptoms and provide pain relief through exercise and other forms of therapy. There are exercise programmes that you can take advantage of.

Asthma

Physiotherapists can help asthma patients by showing them how to retrain breathing and to breathe in a more relaxed way. They can also recommend activity and exercises that can help manage asthma.

Back Pain

Managing back pain is among the speciality of physiotherapists and seeing one can mean speedy recovery and future prevention. Physiotherapy may involve manual treatments, exercise, acupuncture, and other ways to treat and prevent back pain.

Osteoporosis

Don’t wait for osteoporosis to lead to broken bones, especially when you are at an age where falls and fractures are common. Once diagnosed, you should see a physiotherapist right away, so he can recommend ways to prevent thinning of bones, strengthen bones and muscles, manage pain, and reduce falls.

Chronic Pain

Physiotherapy can help manage the condition and minimise its impact on a patient’s life. If you are suffering from chronic pain, reducing its intensity is a welcome relief. Physiotherapists can also provide massage, hands-on treatments, and other options to manage long-term pain.

Neck Pain

The kind of neck pain that physiotherapists treat is unlike the ordinary pain that you may sometimes experience. It is a musculoskeletal disorder that also includes repetitive strain injury and back pain. Apart from hands-on treatments, such as acupuncture and manual therapy, physiotherapy will also create exercise programmes and provide tips that meet your needs and provide pain relief.

Cardiovascular Disease

Heart attack, stroke, and angina are just some of the problems that seniors may face. One way to prevent these is to exercise and stay active, something physiotherapy can help with. But that’s not all. Physiotherapists also offer cardiac rehabilitation programmes that can improve your quality of life and health.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Pulmonary rehabilitation programmes are considered extremely effective in treating this particular condition, and a physiotherapist is one of the most important health professionals who make up the team that runs the programmes.

Falls and Fractures

What physiotherapist can do is to improve balance, help reduce the risk of falling, strengthen bones, and advise on activities that will maintain or improve your mobility.

Diabetes

What physiotherapists can offer diabetes patients are strategies to help manage lifestyle changes and ensure blood glucose levels are kept under control. These include a healthy diet, exercise regimen, and assessment for a foot splint in case a dropped foot is developed.

Cancer

Research shows that exercise can increase a cancer patient’s chances of survival or prevent some cancers from coming back. Physiotherapy can help keep patients active and find ways to treat side effects such as lymphoedema, osteoporosis, and tiredness.

Other conditions that physiotherapy can treat, prevent, and/or manage are high blood pressure, Parkinson’s disease, incontinence, and multiple sclerosis.

The same health professionals will also provide recommendations for occupational health and rehabilitation programmes.

Needless to say, young and old alike can benefit from what physiotherapists can offer, whether they are affected by the conditions listed above or not. With the kind of preventative tips that they can provide, seeking their help will definitely work to your advantage.

Podiatrists

A lot of people ask me, “what do Podiatrists actually do?”. The common perception of our profession is the ability to only treat toenails and hard skin. I can guarantee we do so much more than that! Podiatrists are university trained to assess, diagnose, manage and treat all foot and ankle conditions in a conservative manner. If the case requires a surgical or more invasive treatment, we are able to refer on to Podiatric Surgeons or other professionals who can provide the service. As general podiatrists, we commonly treat the conditions below:

Bunions / hammer toes / Tailor’s bunions
Heel / arch pain / plantar fasciitis.
Ingrown toenails.
Warts.
Callus (hard skin / cracked heels).
Corns (pin-points of hard skin).
Fungal toenails / skin.
Morton’s neuroma (sharp, shooting forefoot pain).
Diabetic feet
Sports injuries; ankle, midfoot, forefoot.
Gait/Walking abnormalities
Paediatric conditions; club foot, pigeon toeing.

For the next few weeks I will talk more about the conditions above and go over signs and symptoms and when is the appropriate time to come in to be assessed by a qualified, AHPRA registered Podiatrist.

Any other foot problems not on the list? No worries, come and have your feet examined now at Dr7 Podiatry, call 9349 1777 to make an appointment.

Helping Seniors Manage Diabetes | Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry

Helping Seniors Live the Good Life despite Having Diabetes

Diabetes can happen to anyone at any age, but seniors are at risk of acquiring the disease for a variety of reasons. Although the condition is not age-related, the risk factors increase as you grow older. At Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry Yokine, we encourage our patients to live healthier and to be more active to help fight diabetes.

  • Type 1 diabetes is often diagnosed during childhood.
  • Type 2 diabetes is often diagnosed in adulthood.

diabetes

Who are at risk of diabetes?

  • Adults over 45 years old, who are overweight, have high blood pressure and a genetic predisposition.
  • Adults over the age of 55.
  • Adults who have heart disease or have a heart attack in the past.
  • Adults who are overweight and have polycystic ovary syndrome.
  • Adults over 35 years old and are Aboriginal Australian or Torres Strait Islander.

In Australia, an estimated 50% of those with diabetes are 65 years or older. The prevalence of diabetes increases rapidly up to age 75 based on 2014-15 data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2014–15 National Health Survey.

Clearly, there is a need to prevent diabetes from affecting anyone, but most especially seniors who would feel the complications twice as much.

The problem with this disease, however, is that symptoms don’t always manifest early on. It is not as obvious in young people as it is in the elderly. This calls for regular checkups of blood sugar levels.

Because failure to do so can lead to accumulation of glucose in the blood that can:

  • Cause damage to the artery and kidney
  • Increase the risk of heart attack and stroke
  • Result in eye damage that will lead to vision loss
  • Lead to erectile dysfunction in men
  • Cause nerve damage that can result in traumatic injury
  • Cause infection that can lead to amputation of limbs

When diabetes hits, however, the best approach is to manage the disease.

How do you help seniors manage their diabetes?

Consult the doctor regularly

Regular blood tests are necessary to keep the disease under control, as well as monitoring of weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and health of the feet. Your doctor will also administer flu and pneumococcal disease vaccinations and prescribe insulin or oral hypoglycaemic agents.

See a podiatrist regularly

Serious foot complications can arise because of diabetes. Vascular disease, ulceration, and neuropathy are just three of the diabetic foot problems that seniors may experience. A visit to a podiatrist at Dr7 Podiatry Joondanna will help minimise nerve damage and promote proper blood flow to your legs and feet.

Podiatry services will include a complete diabetic foot assessment that is followed by recommendations on how you can keep your feet in good health. Dr7 Podiatry Yokine and our professional podiatrists can offer these services.

Some of the things you may need to do include:

  • Washing your feet in warm water daily
  • Checking for cuts, blisters, and sores
  • Moisturising dry skin, especially between the toes
  • Wearing socks/stockings to prevent blisters, and slipper or shoes to prevent injuries

In addition, you need to ensure proper blood flow to your limbs by putting your feet up when sitting down, not crossing the legs for long periods, and not wearing tight socks and garters.

Make healthy choices

It is not enough that you watch an elderly loved one’s diet. You also need to ensure they make healthy food choices, such as more fruits and vegetables and less fat. Foods that contain carbohydrates make ideal options. If they stay in aged care residences, a healthy diet should be easier to achieve.

If you live with an elderly parent or loved one, however, you should pattern your diet with theirs if you eat together to encourage them to change their diet and make healthy choices. You should also stock up on food that they should eat and remove anything that will tempt them to get off the rails.

Engage in some form of physical activity

There are many physical activities that can do wonders for ageing individuals, but exercise, in particular, can have an impact on diabetes. It can:

  • Improve glucose tolerance
  • Lower the risk of developing serious complications
  • Help the body manage, reduce, and relieve stress
  • Control weight, which is vital to ensure a successful diabetes treatment

For seniors who are still free from diabetes, exercise also serves as the best form of prevention.

Dr7 Physiotherapy and Podiatry Tuart Hill, has a hydrotherapy pool where patients can exercise in and we offer group aquafit and arthritis classes as well.

Help them quit smoking

This may be easier said than done, but you must insist. Smoking increases the risk of complications from diabetes, something an elderly parent would not want to endure or you would not want to witness. Find ways to encourage them to quit smoking or reduce their desire to reach for that cigarette.

Ensure recommended vaccinations are up to date

diabetes 1

Seniors with diabetes are more prone to acquiring various infections. This is why they should be vaccinated for some of the most common types of infections, such as Influenza & Pneumonia and Hepatitis B. Doing so will help ensure they don’t end up in hospitals more often than necessary.

Prevent diabetes whenever possible, and manage them properly when it hits you or an elderly loved one. Life goes on despite diabetes, after all.
